# AI video editor

AI video editor is a browser-based video editor for clips generated by [AI video clipping](/docs/agents/ai-video-clipping). You open a clip, cut it on the timeline, add captions, text, images, video, and transitions, clean it up with AI tools, and export the result as a new clip. The original clip stays unchanged.

It's for creators, marketing teams, and media teams who use AI video clipping and want to polish a clip before they publish it. Everything happens in the dashboard, so there's no download, re-upload, or separate editing tool.

## Key concepts

Use these terms the same way across the AI video editor docs. They match the product.

| Term | What it means |
| -------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Clip | A short video generated by AI video clipping. The editor edits one clip at one aspect ratio at a time. |
| Generated clip | An original clip from AI video clipping, listed under **Generated** on the Clips page. |
| Saved edits | A draft of your edit, stored per clip and per aspect ratio. It is not a video yet. |
| Export | Renders your edit as a new clip in the same project. The original clip and your saved edits stay unchanged. |
| Edited clip | The new clip an export creates, listed under **Edited** on the Clips page. It can be published and downloaded, but not opened in the editor again. |
| Timeline | The bottom panel. Its rows, top to bottom, are Transitions, Images, Text, Video, and Audio. |
| Split | A cut point at the playhead. A split on its own removes nothing. |
| Section | The part of the Video row between two splits. Select a section to delete it. |
| Overlay | A text layer, image, or transition. Each sits on its own row and can be moved and trimmed. |
| Playhead | The current position in the video. New items are placed at the playhead. |
| Transcript | The word-timed text of everything said in the clip. |
| Caption preset | A ready-made caption style, the same catalogue used when generating clips. |
| Brand kit | A saved set of caption style and colors, logo, intro, outro, and clean-up settings for the workspace. |
| AI tools | One-click edits driven by the transcript, such as Remove pauses. |

## Before you begin

Make sure you have the following:

* An AI video clipping project with at least one ready clip. A clip is ready when **Download HD** is available for it. See [AI video clipping](/docs/agents/ai-video-clipping).
* A desktop browser. Chrome is recommended. Edge, Safari, and Firefox also work. Mobile browsers aren't supported.
* Optional: a [brand kit](/docs/agents/apply-a-brand-kit), if you want to apply your branding in one step.

\

## How the AI video editor works

Editing a clip follows five stages:

1. [**Open a clip**](#open-a-clip-in-the-editor): start from a ready clip in an AI video clipping project.
2. [**Edit**](/docs/agents/edit-on-the-timeline): cut on the timeline, then add captions, text, images, video, transitions, and AI clean-up.
3. [**Save a draft**](/docs/agents/save-and-export): store your edit so you can come back to it.
4. [**Export**](/docs/agents/save-and-export): render the edit as a new clip.
5. **Publish**: publish or download the new clip like any other clip.

The original clip is never changed, saved edits are a draft, and every export is a new clip, so you can experiment freely.

\

## Open a clip in the editor

You always start from a clip. There's no editor link in the dashboard navigation.

1. Open your Clips project.
2. Hover over a ready clip and select the **Edit clip** icon. You can also open the clip and select **Edit Clip**.

**Result:** The editor opens full screen. The header shows the clip title and aspect ratio, for example "My clip · 9:16".

If the clip already has saved edits at this aspect ratio, the button reads **Continue editing**.

> **NOTE:** **Edit clip** is available once the clip is ready. Until then, the tooltip reads "Available once the clip is ready". If generation failed, it reads "Edit clip unavailable — processing failed".

> **NOTE:** The editor edits the aspect ratio selected in the clip window. To edit another ratio, switch it in the clip window first. Each ratio keeps its own saved edits.

> **NOTE:** Edited clips (exports) can't be opened in the editor.

To leave, select the back arrow in the header. If you have unsaved changes, an **Unsaved changes** dialog asks you to choose **Leave anyway** or **Stay**.

## The editor at a glance

| Area | What's there |
| ------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Header (top) | Back arrow, clip title and aspect ratio with the project name under it, an **Unsaved changes** or **Saved N ago** status, and **Save changes** and **Export** buttons. |
| Tool sidebar (left edge) | AI tools, Captions, Upload, Transitions, Text, and Brand kit. B Roll and Music are greyed out with a **Soon** pill. |
| Transcript (left panel) | Always visible. Selecting a tool slides its panel over the transcript. Select the tool again to close it. |
| Preview (right) | The output frame at the clip's aspect ratio. Drag text and images here. Playback controls are in the timeline bar, not on the preview. |
| Timeline (bottom) | A top bar with Undo, Redo, Split, Delete, playback controls, a timecode (current / total), and **Hide timeline**. Below it are the Transitions, Images, Text, Video, and Audio rows. |

Both dividers can be dragged: the one between the left panel and the preview, and the one above the timeline.

## What you can do

Each task has its own page:

* [Edit video on the timeline](/docs/agents/edit-on-the-timeline): play, split, delete, trim, add an intro or outro, and use the transcript to navigate.
* [Add captions](/docs/agents/add-captions): caption the clip with a preset.
* [Add text, images, and video](/docs/agents/add-text-images-and-video): overlay text and images, insert or replace video, and add transitions.
* [Clean up with AI tools](/docs/agents/clean-up-with-ai-tools): remove pauses and filler words in one step.
* [Apply a brand kit](/docs/agents/apply-a-brand-kit): apply your caption style, colors, logo, intro, outro, and clean-up settings at once.
* [Save and export](/docs/agents/save-and-export): save a draft and export the edit as a new clip.

## Things to know

The AI video editor is in its first release. The following features appear in the editor with a **Coming soon** or **Soon** label and can't be used yet:

| Where | Coming soon |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Tool sidebar | B Roll, Music |
| Captions tool | Font tab, Effects tab |
| Transitions tool | Auto transitions |
| AI tools | Auto censor, Speech enhancement, AI emoji, AI keywords highlight, Speaker color, AI voiceover |
| Brand kit page | Aspect ratio and layout, Highlight keywords, Add emojis, Auto B-roll, Auto transitions |
| Clip window | Export XML |

These are current limits of the editor:

* The aspect ratio can't be changed inside the editor. Switch it in the clip window first. Each ratio has its own saved edits.
* The timeline has no zoom.
* The transcript can't be edited, and you can't cut video by deleting words.
* Captions can't be moved or re-worded, and don't show over intros, outros, or uploaded video.
* Export has no settings. The output matches the clip's aspect ratio: 9:16 is 1080 × 1920, 16:9 is 1920 × 1080, 1:1 is 1080 × 1080, and 4:5 is 1080 × 1350.
* There's no autosave and no version history.
* Edited clips can't be opened in the editor again.
* Uploaded files stay in the Upload library only until you reload.
* Brand kits can't be renamed or deleted.
* Desktop browsers only.

#### Frequently asked questions

No. The original clip is never changed. Saved edits are a draft, and every export is a new clip.

**Save changes** stores a draft so you can keep editing later. **Export** renders the edit as a new clip you can publish or download. Export doesn't save the draft. See [Save and export](/docs/agents/save-and-export).

No. Open the original clip again, where the button reads **Continue editing**, change it, and export again.
